Choose Curtains to Decorate a Room

Kids Bedroom Curtains:

We will first start with a kid’s bedroom. One of best curtains to use in a kid’s room are blackout curtains. Blackout curtains will block out all the light in the windows. Sunlight proves to be a big distraction in the morning and during nap times for kids. There are a few options in blackout curtains that are not only functional but stylish as well. You can find cotton blackout curtains in some nice contemporary styles that are suitable for both boys and girls. There are fancier yet affordable options such as faux silk blackout curtains. These curtains are more suitable for young girls and teens. You can also find some blackout roman shade curtains that will fit inside of the window itself for a neat appearance.

Adult Bedroom Curtains:

Next we will look at an adult’s bedroom. Whether it be a guest bedroom or a master bedroom, there are more options to decorate in this space. If you would like to add a romantic atmosphere in your master bedroom, look for higher end options like silk curtains or balloon curtains. Both will add a soft elegant feel into the room. There are endless color options in both styles, so matching with your current d├ęcor should be no problem. You can even have blackout added to either of these curtains if light is a problem in this room. Linen curtains are nice to add in a guest bedroom. They are casual and bring on a relaxed atmosphere, which I am sure your guest will appreciate. Once again, you can find linen curtains with or without blackout if that is needed.

Living Room Curtains:

Living rooms are a great place to add some high-end curtains. Here you can splurge on custom curtains to ensure you get the proper lengths to enhance your room and give the allusion of a grander space. Some nice curtains to add to a living room are velvet curtains or silk curtains. Both styles showcase elegance and give a rich appearance. If you are trying to create a formal living room, be sure to add tassels and trims to your curtains. This will also be a nice place to layer curtains, by adding a set of sheer curtains behind your main drapery panels. If you prefer a more relaxed living area, or may have a high traffic area in this space you can add nice contemporary cotton curtains that can be washed.

Kitchen Curtains:

Last we will look at the kitchen area. Adding curtains in your kitchen is a must. You can find a lot of nice and affordable valance curtains or roman shade curtains. These are best in the kitchen as they serve both style and function, but will not be in the way of the dirt and debris that a kitchen can bring. Some popular curtain styles are roman shade curtains, and balloon valances. They are available in cottons which are washable, and there are many color and design available.

Determine Roof Slope

Determine Roof Slope, But Maintain Ladder Safety

To determine roof slope, place a ladder at the side of your house so that you may easily access the down slope edge of the roof. At this point, you should be in line with the roof’s peak, which means the roof should slope up from left to right or from right to left, but not away from you. Before you begin, make sure that your ladder is secured. You will need to use both hands to determine roof slope and will not want to be distracted by a shaky ladder. This can be bothersome, but also very dangerous. When working on a ladder, make sure that it’s perfectly safe. If you have trouble with heights and do not wish to climb the ladder yourself, ask a friend to help or call a roofing professional.

How To Determine Roof Slope Accurately

Now that you’re ready to get started, it’s important to know that you will not need to be on the roof to do this, which is ideal because walking directly on the roof can be dangerous. Begin by holding a framing square onto the roofline while making sure that the long end of the “L” is pointing toward the roof’s center and the short end is pointing down toward the ground. The long end of the framing square should meet the edge of the roof at the 12″ line. Level the square horizontally and read the measurement on the short end.

To determine roof slope, remember that rise is the measurement on the vertical leg while run is the 12″ measurement on the horizontal line. If you are using a framing square, keep in mind that some have measurements on both edges. If that is the case with your framing square, consult the measurements on the inside edges for an accurate number. Remember that, if your roof rises 8 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally, then you can determine roof slope to be at 8/12.

A Few Options

If you do not have a framing square to measure roof slope, a ruler or tape measure will also work because the slope is measured based on a 12″ horizontal distance. If you are using a tape measure, look for one that has a push lock. This will help avoid unnecessary problems with constantly having to pull the tape measure back out to double check the slope measurements.

Remove Wallpaper That’s Been Painted Over

If you do not already know how to remove wallpaper, simply review the steps before getting started. What you will see is that it is a very similar process to removing painted wallpaper. You will first need to gather all the necessary items, including:

  • 3-in-1 Scraper Tool or Broad Knife
  • Serrated Paper Scoring Tool (Or stiff wire brush)
  • Quality Wallpaper Stripper Solution (Or liquid fabric softener mixed with water and vinegar)
  • Wallpaper Removal Cloth
  • Ladder or Step Stool
  • Large Plastic Bucket
  • 2 Gallons Warm Water
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Protective Eyewear
  • Drop Cloths or Tarps

Keep in mind that you may require new drywall installation if you find that there are several layers of paint on top of the wallpaper. If there are only a few layers of paint, you may be successful at removing it without having to replace the drywall. Once you have all the necessary supplies, you are ready to get your hands wet! Here’s how to get started:

  1. Using medium pressure, score the outer layer on the wall with the paper scoring tool. Too much pressure can damage the wall so take your time on this part. You may also use a thick-bristled wire brush, or both. Choose the tool that you are more comfortable using and that produces the most results.
  1. Once you have scored the paint, spray on your wallpaper stripper solution, focusing on small sections at a time. Then allow the solution to soak into the wall for a few minutes. Spraying too much solution on at once can damage the wall, so don’t be too generous with the spray bottle. If you do not wish to use a commercial wallpaper stripper solutions, you can mix water, vinegar, and liquid fabric softener into a plastic spray bottle instead.
  1. After the solution has soaked into the wall for a few minutes, grab your 3-in-1 scraper tool (available at any local hardware or home improvement store for a lower price), and start with the sharpest edge. Get underneath the painted wallpaper and work slowly to scrape it away. Scraping in alternate directions will help expedite the effects.
  1. Expect this process to take several hours, or even days depending on the drywall or plaster used, the type of wallpaper adhesive, the square footage of the wall, the extent of paint on top of the wallpaper, and much more. After an abundant amount of dedication, patience, and effort, you will eventually get it all!

Garden Improvement

The only problem was that the shed was still cluttered inside plus there was branches growing inside from e neighbouring tree. The branch was growing right through the shed and sprouting out of the roof. There was also a lot of junk accumulating in the garden over the years, as I was like many people of clearing unwanted items from the house and storing in the garden.

So I made the decision to do something about it. The first part of my plan to modernise the garden was to have major clearance of all the junk. So I enlisted the help of my brother Roger and we gathered together all the junk in the garden into
one main pile, also we cleared the shed of the junk inside onto the pile. we then commenced with dismantling the shed. This was then piled as junk onto a separate pile. Then I had the whole lot taken away by a private contractor.

I then set about laying the ground work for the garden by clearing away all the bramble and weeds, then the task of designing the layout. Over the course of a year the garden was dug over, raked, divided into sections and the most important part was buying a greenhouse. I felt that a greenhouse was going to be the very heart of growing my own plants and flowers from seeds which after a few months proved quite successful.

I can only express how other gardeners can feel is the sheer joy and pleasure of watching them starting from seed, growing into seedlings and eventually full-grown flowers to display in your garden either in the ground or in display baskets or containers.

Residential Foundation Repair

If you suspect that you may have a potential problem with your foundation you should immediately have a plumber come in and inspect your pipes and sewer lines for leaks. The results you get from these inspections will be very helpful to any foundation specialists you may hire to look into your situation.

Calling several foundation repair specialists to inspect your home will be your next step. These specialists will look into contributing factors to potential cracks, as well as interior measurements. Once they have completed their inspection they will then give you a report of their findings you will be able to understand, as well as estimates for the cost of repair.

You should never attempt to fix foundation damage on your own. These types of problems should always be left to professionals who are specially trained to handle these types of situations.

Upgrading the support structure of your home is the only way to fix foundation problems. The type of support you will use will depend on many different factors. You will use different support structures with different types of soils. The depth of the support piers will also depend on the type of soil that is underneath your home. These piers come in many different sizes and length. It will be your job to hire a contractor that will know which type to use for your specific situation. In any case, you should never rely on the opinion of one source. Asking for a second opinion from a professional engineer will prove to be very beneficial for you.

Shower Pump

A shower pump increases the amount of water released from the shower head. But before buying one, there are factors that have to be considered for you to choose the right shower pump for your house. The first thing to look into is the type of heating system in the house. You will either have an unvented system, a combi boiler system, or a gravity fed system. An unvented system means that you have a hot water cylinder as a separate source. The combi boiler system is only reliant on the main pipe’s pressure as a source of hot water. The gravity fed system is commonly used by older houses and is the poorest when it comes to water pressure. If you have a gravity fed system then the next step is to check if you have negative head system or a positive head system. In a negative head system, there is a water outlet above the 600 mm which is located below the cold water tank. In a positive head system, the water outlets are at the bottom of the 600 mm line located below the cold water tank. The twin shower pump, either the positive or negative head, is good for improving the water pressure in one small bathroom to many bathrooms inside the house. In a combi boiler system you can use a whole-house pump to improve water pressure.

There are different types of shower pumps appropriate for the right heating system. The centrifugal impeller pump is effective in releasing large volumes of water but its installation can be tricky. The regenerative impeller pump releases lesser volumes of water in comparison to the centrifugal but its installation is not difficult. The negative head pump operates via pressure difference between the outlet and the pump. The positive head pump operates via water flow. The twin impeller pump is capable of pumping both hot and cold water. The singe impeller pump is only for pumping either hot or cold water

How to Decorate Ethnically

While it is hard to control what happens in the outside world, home is where you decide the who, what, where, when and why. Ethnic decor is filled with endless options to spice up your living space. However, you may wonder, what is ethnic decor.

“Ethnic decor is more a feeling than a science,” says Marcelo Velez of the interior design firm Velez Hayes in New York City. “When you say modern, country, French, et cetera, an instant picture comes to mind. Ethnic decor is different. Many cannot define it, but know it when they see it.”

This open-ended approach is what makes ethnic decorating fun. It’s eclectic, inclusive, colorful and most of all, unique. It allows you to fill in blanks for yourself, using an internal palette to satisfy decorating needs.

Here are some handy ideas to get you started:

  • Pick a room to start. Thinking in terms of one room narrows your scope so the project doesn’t seem overwhelming, while also limiting cost as you feel your way into the project.
  • Decide which ethnicity(ies) you will focus on: African style is different from Middle Eastern is different from American Indian, et cetera. However, don’t be afraid to blend elements from several cultures. Again, that’s the fun of ethnic decor – the possibilities are endless.
  • Start with an object as the focal point and decorate around it: This can be an ethnic painting, a sculpture, a piece of furniture, et cetera. The bigger the better. Be careful, though, not to overwhelm your space.

How To Prevent Termite Damage

Termites are possibly, the worst pest you could ever hope to encounter in your home. With an estimated billion dollar cost of home damages recorded per year, these bugs have brought terror and destruction to many home owners. If you ever have the misfortune of experiencing termite damage, it could mean having to deal with termite colonies that house between 500,000 to one million termites. And if you do not deal properly with these colonies, termite damage would cost you thousands of dollars each time you fail to put in place sufficient termite control.

So what can you, as a homeowner, do to prevent termite damage and institute measurable termite control in your abode? We identify some of the more manageable methods that you can use to ensure termites do not add to your home-owning problems, and these are also ways which you can use on a DIY level.

  1. Remove all wooden materials that you do not require and keep them away in a place that is a distance away from your home. Termites love wood, so any pieces of wood left lying out in the open would attract these pests. And if they happen to be near your house, be prepared to have to deal with termites.
  2. Keep potential areas where moisture can build up away from your home. Termites are attracted to wood, and they are also attracted to areas where moisture or humidity is high. Avoid occurrences of water leakage, buildup of rainwater or any situations where water can end up being collected and become a source of termite growth.
  3. Check for cracks or broken holes in your house, and more importantly, in the foundation of your home. Do this regularly. If you find any, make a conscious effort to seal them up. This can help to protect your house from any termites crawling into its foundation and attacking or chewing it down, literally.

Install Sliding Barn Doors

With the materials needed, here are the most common tools you should have. You don’t need to be too exact with them; anything equal to them can also be usable. Also, the bolts and nuts included in the door, you will need the following items:

  1. Goggles and protection gear, level, tape measure, socket wrench, the sliding barn doors and other needed materials (bolts, spacers and other mounting items), saw, drill, awl, wooden mounting board, router, and paint.
  2. When starting out, you need a couple of men to do the job. You can hold track of the support of the door to get a mounting board but with a slightly bigger size the track to be installed. The drywall anchors, bolts, spacers are the ones that will hold the track and the roller to be in place. You can alternatively paint the mounting board to your desired color to match the door color.
  3. You can now assemble the steel track. With the joint brackets placed according to the specifications of your barn door. You need to cut a track for the width amount needed, this must be double the girth of its door to permit the door to be opened entirely to the size of the actual width.
  4. The next step is to measure the drill holes that you need to put the steel track. When they are to be attached, you need to use the awl to create a space for the drill to remove the occurrence of slipping while drilling. Here is the part where you need to wear the goggles as metal will get hot.
  5. You will now measure the track, make sure they are aligned with the use of a level. The next is to install the track along with the spacers to the board and use the bolts.
  6. Attaching the hanger roller and be sure to follow your doors’ instructions, you will now install the bolts, washers, and other nuts. You can get tighten them with the use of a socket wrench. The next is to attach the bottom roller guide and you can hang the door and you’re all done.

You can practically save more money if you follow this guide. But be sure to get more persons to help you out to make sure they can help you out on other things. Also, having a good sliding barn door can be obtained along the internet or just canvass well and get a cheaper but sturdy door for your liking.

Sump Pumps

While the water fills up the sump pit, the sump pump starts up, and pumps the water out of the basement. The water gets pumped either outdoors, away from the foundation of the house, or into the main water drainage system of the house. To keep the basement from getting flooded, the water is diverted into the hole and moved out by the sump pump. There are two types of sump pump; one type is submersible while the other type is called a pedestal.

A submersible pump is about 12 inches tall and is placed completely inside the tank inside the bottom of the pit. Some contain a float switch to turn the pump on when needed. This switch is electrical and encased in a hard plastic bubble and floats when the water rises. When the water reaches a certain height, the switch turns on to activate the pump.

Submersible pumps are located on the bottom of the units and the water is sucked up through the bottom. This type of pump also comes with a grate or screen over the face of it to keep any debris from getting into the impeller, which could clog the pump.

A pedestal pump is mounted on a small pedestal and stands about 30 inches tall. The motor of this pump has a pipe that extends to the bottom of the pit and it too has a float switch to activate the pump. Since the motor of this type of pumps is not designed for underwater use, the switch will activate the pump before the water reaches the bottom of the pumps motor.

Actually, houses have more of a horsepower requirement for a sump pump instead of a size requirement. This is determined by the area of drainage that is connected to the sumps as well as the depth of the basement, groundwater and other factors. The more water that is expected to accumulate in the sump pit, the more horsepower is required to move it.

To allow space for the pump and the piping as well as the water storage between pumping, sump pits should be about 2 feet in diameter.

It is advisable to use a liner when constructing a pit for your sump pump and plastic is a preferable material. Metal can also be used in it’s construction. Be sure to place 3 to 4 inches of course gravel should be placed in the bottom of the pit when installing the liner.

One of the worst things a homeowner may experience is a basement that constantly leaks with every rain or snow melt or a basement that is flooded. One of the ways to prevent this from happening is with a sump pump. Sump pumps are handy devices that help you maintain the value of your home. Not only do they protect your belongings and your foundation from water damage, but they also save you thousands of dollars in water damage repairs.
